Five Reasons an In-Home Portrait Session Might Be Exactly What You Need
There’s something subtle and powerful about being photographed in your own space.
It’s not just about convenience or avoiding traffic. Not about glitzy lights and big bright spaces. It’s about comfort. About presence. About allowing the place you live to hold you as you allow me to photograph you.
I’ve photographed people in all kinds of homes: small, grand, minimalist, colourful, quiet. And every time, the portraits feel more personal, more grounded, and so much more real. There’s a rhythm we fall into when we stay where we are. It's that kind of exhale that happens when you don’t have to go anywhere or be anyone else but yourself. Through the consultation process, you have already gotten to know me, so by the time the photoshoot rolls around, I am no stranger invading your house, but a friend being invited into your home.
Here’s why these sessions have become such a meaningful part of my work.
1. You’re already home
You don’t have to pack a bag, navigate traffic, or worry about whether you’ve forgotten something. You’re already where you need to be.
There’s an ease that happens when you stay in your own space. You move differently. You breathe more easily. Your body recognises the furniture, the floor, and the light. You’re more likely to relax, not into a performance, but into something honest that is free of the masks we tend to carry around with us when we're in public.
And when you feel at ease, something beautiful happens. Not loud or dramatic. Just something quietly true and utterly stunning.
2. Your home holds part of your story
You don’t need to live in a perfectly styled space for your surroundings to matter.
The chair by the window where you drink your morning coffee. The painting your friend made. The worn edge of the kitchen counter you lean against to observe the birds in the morning. These details, whether they show up in the final portraits or simply help you feel grounded, hold something of you and in turn help your own process.
And if you’d rather keep your space in the background, that’s fine too. I can set up a studio in your living room, your hallway, or by a window with good light. I don’t need much space to create the editorial portraits I am known for. You just need to show up. I’ll take care of the rest.
3. Your wardrobe is right there
No need to overthink outfits ahead of time. I’ll guide you through the styling process during our consultation, and on the day of the session, we can quite literally raid your closet together. It's actually incredibly fun, and while I encourage you to have clothes already laid out, oftentimes we end up in a completely different direction, that might feel bolder, but also feels infinitely more like yourself.
We’ll find pieces that feel like you. Not just what looks good in photos, but what feels right in your body. The things you feel most like yourself in. That’s where we start. I might gently push you to step outside of your comfort zone, into the clothes you've been saving for that day when you dare. I give you permission in that moment to dare. With me.
4. You don’t have to perform
You don’t have to walk into a studio and figure out how to settle in. You don’t have to adapt to a space that wasn’t built for you. You don’t have to navigate a new environment while already feeling a little uncertain about being photographed. It's not a new and unfamiliar location, that feels slightly grading on your nervous system as you come to terms with the fact that soon, you'll be in front of the camera.
You can stay where you are. Wear your favourite socks. Put on your favourite music. Step outside for a moment if you need to breathe. You can take your time.
That, to me, is everything.
5. I come to you
Most of my sessions take place in southern Sweden and Denmark—in Älmhult, Copenhagen, Malmö, and nearby towns. But I also work with clients across Europe and beyond. Remember, most of my career was in the US, so I am always happy to move myself to come to you.
If there’s a place that feels important to you, somewhere with meaning, mood, or memory, I’ll do what I can to meet you there. Whether it’s a coastal flat, a cottage in the woods, or a corner of your apartment that feels like yours, we’ll make it work. Maybe you've always dreamed about being photographed in Iceland, Scotland or Portugal?
You don’t have to travel to be seen. I’ll bring what’s needed. What matters is that you feel held in the space we create together.
What we create is shaped by where we begin
Your home doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be tidy, spacious, or photogenic.
It just has to be yours. And you just have to be willing to meet yourself and me in it.
If this way of working speaks to you, I’d love to create something together. Something slow, intentional, and honest. Portraits that reflect the way you move through your own life, softly, fully, in your own time.
PS: Every image in this post was made in someone’s home or personal space. Nothing fancy. Just real people, in the places they live and work.
